Sue Cotton welcomed everybody to Beeston U3A’s first AGM. She said “I think you will agree we have had a successful first year. We have 376 members, 27 or so Groups and over 150 members usually attend at open meetings. The website has had over 8500 hits and our quality newsletter is the envy of the Region. This is all good but there is no reason for complacency. We need more interest groups but that cannot happen we get some volunteers for Group leadership. Remember U3A’s run on, are run by and operate only because of volunteer time and effort.
It has been a steep learning curve for the Committee. We have worked together to improve the value of membership, both at monthly Committee Meetings an in between times. We are now using sub committees to spread the load. A recent idea is to establish a “new members corner” on the left in the hall during Open Meetings’ coffee time to give anyone who has come alone a community to join. There will also be a new members get together in the hall at the end of this meeting.
The members outing to Rockingham Castle before Christmas was very successful and further outings and events are currently available – a trip to St Pancras Station and a Jubilee celebration and tea here details of both are available on the notice board. Please sign up on the sheet provided if you are interested in going. Plans are underway for another Christmas outing and other events which will be notified in due course.
It has been useful to request renewal forms from everyone this year to collect offers of help and permission to reclaim tax vis Gift Aid but forms will not be required every year. We shall be working on the Gift Aid claim very soon.
The Notts. Network of U3A’s and the Regional Group have organised several meetings and workshops at which we have always been represented. A very useful one was held recently for U3A officers to get together and learn from each other. The Regional conference is to be held in Loughborough on 10 July entitled “Communication” and includes their AGM. The National U3A Conference is to be held at the Royal Horticultural College in Cirencester in September. Details of both are on the notice board in the hall.
On your behalf I would like to thank those people who have helped make this organisation so successful. These are Refreshment Organiser, Sheila Strang and her many helpers, our no less important “meeters and greeters”, the Committee and very helpful staff of this church, our signing-in helpers, our valuable web masters and absolutely vital Group Leaders. I ask you to show your appreciation for all their efforts in the time honoured way.
It only remains for me to thank the Members of the Steering Committee for their significant input in getting us this far.”
