We meet on the 3rd Friday of the month from 2-4pm (upstairs in meeting room 2 in Beeston Library) to discuss current affairs.
The meeting is split into a number of 15-20 minutes slots (plus a 10 minute tea/coffee break) and in each slot we look at a topic that has been in the news (in the newspapers, on the web, on TV, etc.).
Members come with topics that are of interest to them and these are picked on a lucky dip basis. The person whose topic is picked spends a minute or two introducing it and then we discuss it. Normally there are more topics suggested than we have time to cover, but we reserve the last slot of the meeting for people who didn’t get their subject picked to briefly talk about it (or something else they’ve seen in the news) if they wish. But if you have no topic to suggest that doesn’t matter, you can come along and just listen or join in the general discussions.
Sometimes for the first discussion we pick a topic in advance of the meeting that has recently been in the news and as well as discussing it among ourselves we look at how the same story is covered by different news outlets.
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you wish to join the group.
December 2015 Newsletter
We are a current affairs discussion group and we meet on the 3rd Friday of the month in a large upstairs meeting room in Beeston Library 2-4pm.
New members welcome; you won’t be at any disadvantage as the topics for discussion are decided on the day and it’s always something new. Just come along and join in or just listen to the discussion. We tend to discuss 2 or 3 topics, then have a refreshment break before discussing a couple more topics.

What the Papers Say, the Current Affairs Discussion Group, continues to meet on the third Friday of the month 2-4pm upstairs in Beeston Library.
It is very much a participatory group; come along with a news topic you have found interesting or bring a newspaper cutting or just listen and join in with the discussion (if you want). We generally discuss 4 or 5 items in the news, decided on the day, have a refreshment break in the middle and finish with a quick fire round of hot topics.
Next meetings are September 18th, October 16th. Email email@example.com for more details.
June 2015 Newsletter
This Current Affairs Discussion Group is a new group and at the time of writing we have met only once. There were eleven of us and we had a lively discussion on four or five news items suggested by members. Half way through we had a refreshment break. It is a participatory group; members can (and did) suggest topics, join in discussions and ‘chair’ sessions. It all seemed to go rather well, several people told me that they had enjoyed the first session, thanks to all who contributed. I look forward to further interesting and informative discussions on a wide range of topics.
If you are interested in joining the Group, we are meeting on the third Friday of the month at 2pm at Beeston Library on Foster Avenue.
