Twelve members of Buddies enjoyed a lovely afternoon with a delicious afternoon tea at “Two for Tea” in Stapleford last month.

We still meet on the last Friday of the month, at the White Lion in Beeston and new members are always welcome.

My ‘takeover’ of Buddies came about when I offered to stand in for Marie while she was away one weekend. Somehow she interpreted this friendly offer to outright takeover but did agree to doing the computer stuff as I am a bit of a technophobe!

Buddies is important to all who are alone and I am happy to be more involved. Zena is helping and both of us are happy to relieve Marie of one of her many responsibilities. However, we have insisted she attends whenever she can and we have invited her and George to our Afternoon Tea (as long as she pays)!

Venue is Two for Tea, Derby Road, Stapleford, on June 15th at 2.00 pm.

Final numbers and the £10 fee will be collected at the next Buddies on the 29th. Numbers are limited so it will be on first come/first served basis. Don’t forget to mention any dietary requirements!

Our Buddies post-Christmas celebration took place at our last meeting and we enjoyed a buffet lunch at the White Lion. Sergio, the owner put on an excellent spread, including his speciality, Portuguese custard tarts. I have decided to stand down as leader and the reins have been taken up by Jean Willgoose. It has been a pleasure being involved in Buddies and I hope it will continue. Thanks to all of you for your support in the past especially Jean Breda and Zena.

We have had three more enjoyable Buddies meetings at the White Lion. I missed the September meeting as I was laid up after a knee operation, but managed to get to the October meeting sporting elbow crutches. I was fighting fit by November though and able to welcome back Betty, who had also had a knee operation, and to join with Buddies members in wishing a Happy Birthday to Maureen. I am sworn to secrecy on which birthday, but suffice to say it began with an eight and ended with a nought! Well done Maureen.

We welcomed more new members to the group too and made plans for the next two meetings. So take note members, that, as the December meeting would fall on Boxing Day, we decided to bring it forward to the 19th December. I suspect some of us may try something a little stronger than coffee on that day. Don’t worry though, I will Drink Responsibly!! Last year, we didn’t have a Christmas celebration meeting, as everyone is so busy in December, deciding instead, to postpone it until the New Year. We shall be repeating that this year and I am making plans for this to be at the White Lion on 30th January from 11am. There will be refreshments in the form of a light buffet lunch and other amusements. There will be a small charge for the lunch but I don’t expect this to be much more than £5.00 or thereabouts. If you will be coming, I will be taking names and money at the Open Meeting in December and at the Buddies meeting on the 19th, or you can phone or email me.

We meet on the last Friday of the month, at the White Lion in Beeston at 10.30.

September 2014 Newsletter

In July, we visited “Two for Tea” in Stapleford for a splendid afternoon tea. 29 of us tucked into sandwiches, sumptuous cake and scones and quaffed endless pots of tea. We were really well looked after by the owners, who had opened the tea room especially for our Buddies Group. I am hoping to organise a revisit but I am having my second bionic knee in September, so that may have to wait. If you are a member on your own, and want to make new friends and socialise, come and join us.

Our singles group continues to meet at our “drop in” coffee morning with an average attendance of 20-25. Ivor is often on hand to help move the tables, assisted by other members; in fact some members even arrive before me! Jean, Breda and Zena are usually there to help me to welcome new members who come to Buddies for the first time. It’s interesting to note that when we first changed our venue to the White Lion, we were a bit dismayed to find that there is a parent and toddler coffee morning at the other end of the pub and feared that it would be too noisy. Our fears were groundless however, as the volume from our end of the room far outstrips the children. I am in fact expecting, one of these days, complaints about the noise from the mums!!! It’s so good to see friendships being formed, there’s lots of laughter and we share local information. Why not come and join us one Friday? Just follow the noise and you’ll find us.

Buddies, the friendship group for single, divorced, or widowed members continues to grow. We also welcome those with spousal caring duties who maybe in need of an informal occasional social outlet. As well as our normal drop in coffee mornings at the White Lion Pub in Beeston, in November, we had an authentic curry lunch at the home of one of our members. The event was well attended and the food was excellent.

Also in November, 18 Buddies went to a hotel in Derby for a Dinner and Murder Mystery evening. We arrived in the afternoon and after coffee together, settled into our rooms and unpacked. After getting suitably “glammed up” we congregated for our Murder Mystery Dinner. The players were mingled amongst the assembled company and the action went on around and amongst us during dinner. We were furnished with clues and information from the “Police Inspector” and were at liberty to question other “dinner guests” in an attempt to solve the murders. The evening, rounded off with a little dancing, was a big success and I think, without exception, everyone had a great time. After a night’s sleep and a very good breakfast, we all headed back to Nottingham. Because the lead up to Christmas is so very busy for everyone we decided to have a New Year fuddle in January. One of our members, Jean very kindly offered her house. We had a buffet lunch, a quiz and a prize draw. We also brought along our baby photos and had a “who is it?” competition. There are no new events in the pipeline at the moment but “Watch this space”

We now meet on the last Friday of the month, at the White Lion in Beeston at 10.30. For more information contact me on 9222366 or pottsofnotts@gmail.com

If you are single, do come along and meet us at the White Lion in Beeston 10.30 6th December (don’t forget from January we change to the last Friday of the month).

Our Buddies group, (formerly called MOTO) a friendship group for single members, continues to thrive. We have a lively membership and meet monthly for coffee and chat. Members have formed friendships and organised informal social events. A growing group go to the Tuesday Quiz night at the Cadland Inn; there have been cinema visits, and one Sunday in May, 5 buddies got together for a visit in 2 cars to Burghley House in Stamford. Marianne writes “This magnificent Elizabethan house was built in the 16th century by William Cecil the Queen’s chief minister. Since then it is has undergone an almost continuous programme of restoration and is now administered by a Conservation Trust. The rooms, furnishings and decor range from the amazing, sumptuous, elegant and quite frankly bizarre, but never boring. The visit was followed by a very tasty pub lunch in the nearby town of Stamford – which itself is worth a visit. Altogether a very successful and satisfying day out.” Members who meet individually for coffee and a chat. We meet on the first Friday of the month and 10.30 am but note that we are moving to a new venue, The White Lion in Beeston from 7th June. This venue is newly refurbished, beautifully clean and run by a young couple, Natalie and Sergio who are very welcoming and hospitable. The coffee is good and Sergio makes “exceedingly good” cake! Whether you are a new or an established member of U3A, why not come along and try our friendly friendship group.
